The Babysitter analysis
The Babysitter is a new movie that came out this month on Netflix. There was a lot of build up leading up to the film's release and it did not disappoint. the film was directed by McG who is notorious for his role in directing Supernatural, Shadow hunters and The O.C.
The movie is based on the life of a boy named Cole, who's parents are often out of town. He has a babysitter named Bee who seems to share a close Bond with Cole. However, one night Cole was curious as to what Bee did after he went to sleep, so he spied on her. What he saw would be the turning point in the movie as much more blood and gore followed.
A lot of the costumes designed for the main female characters (especially Bee) are very sexually provocative and revealing. This is to emphasise the fact that she is Cole's fantasy and she is very attractive in general. The characters in the movie are generally around late teens/early twenties and it is somewhat of a stereotype that girls this age wear revealing clothes. The use of blood in this movie was very unique. Generally, blood is an eery thing to look at, but in The Babysitter they turned it into a joke! So much blood comes out of the people at points when they are killed that it just makes you laugh out loud. In fact, all of the violence and gore is over-exaggerated to a point where it is comical in the best way imaginable.
The was a lot of flashy cinematography and editing in this movie. For example, the end scene where Cole says goodbye to Bee has a lot of closeups and a zoom out to show the damage that has been done. There was a lot of classic over-the-shoulder shots which is always a nice feature. The moment where Bee was in the pool in a bikini was slowed down to show the fact that she is sexually appearing and to present her as a sex object. There wasn't a great deal of invisible editing in the movie, although that isn't surprising considering the fact they had a massive budget.
There was some familiar music in the movie featuring songs such as 'I want Candy', 'We are the Champions' and 'I just want to make love to you'. The sound in the movie was very effective at creating tension as the moments in which Cole was being chased, the music got more dramatic.
The performances in the movie were generally fantastic. Judah Lewis (Cole) took up his second big role in a movie and absolutely smashed it. Samara Weaving (Bee) put on a fantastic performance too, whilst looking amazing. She shared great chemistry with Lewis. A big name in Bella Thorne was also in the movie, being most remembered for being 'shot in the boob'.
Generally, this film was very good and refreshing to the other horror/horror-comedy films that are being released today. I'd give it a 7.5/10.
